Canada Energy Profile 2024: Electricity Mix

🔥 Fossil Fuels
Fossil fuels made up 20.8% of Canada’s electricity mix in 2024. Natural gas contributed 15.8%, coal 4.1%, and other fossil sources, such as oil, less than 1%. Fossil generation was highest in western provinces, while much of the country remained nearly emissions-free.

🌍 Renewables
Renewables delivered 65.5% of Canada’s electricity. Hydropower dominated with 55.3%, supported by wind at 7.2% and solar at 1.3%. Bioenergy contributed 1.7%, mainly from wood waste.

⚛️ Nuclear Energy
Nuclear power provided 13.7% of generation, almost entirely from Ontario’s CANDU reactors, which are key to the province’s clean grid and industrial base.
