Canada Energy Profile 2025: Electricity Mix
Canada's electricity system remained one of the cleanest among major economies in 2025, with renewables supplying 63.9% of total generation. Hydropower dominated the mix at 52.8%, reflecting Canada's vast network of rivers and hydroelectric facilities, while wind and bioenergy provided additional renewable generation.
Fossil fuels accounted for 23% of electricity generation, with natural gas contributing 17.9% and playing an important role in supporting electricity demand, particularly during periods of peak consumption. Coal continued to make up a relatively small share of the mix at just 4%.
Nuclear energy generated 13.1% of Canada's electricity, with reactors in Ontario providing a reliable source of low-carbon baseload power alongside the country's extensive renewable resources.
