China Energy Profile 2025: Electricity Mix

China remained heavily dependent on coal in 2025, with fossil fuels still providing 58.4% of electricity generation. Coal alone accounted for more than half of the country’s power mix at 54.6%, highlighting the continued role of traditional energy sources in supporting China’s huge industrial economy and rising electricity demand.

At the same time, renewable energy continued expanding rapidly. Renewables reached 37% of generation, led by hydropower (13.2%), solar (11.1%), and wind (10.7%). Solar saw particularly strong growth as China continued adding utility-scale solar farms and rooftop installations at record pace.

Nuclear energy contributed 4.6% of electricity generation. Although still a relatively small share of the overall mix, China continues to expand its nuclear fleet, with reactors under construction across multiple provinces as part of long-term energy security and low-carbon electricity plans.
