Colombia Energy Profile 2025: Electricity Mix
Colombia's electricity system remained one of the cleanest in Latin America in 2025, with renewables supplying 77% of total generation. Hydropower dominated the mix at 69.2%, making it by far the country's largest source of electricity and the foundation of its power system.
Fossil fuels accounted for 23% of electricity generation, led by natural gas at 13.8%, followed by coal at 6.1%. These sources provide additional generation during periods when hydropower output is reduced by changing rainfall and reservoir levels.
Colombia generated no electricity from nuclear power in 2025. Alongside hydropower, solar energy continued to expand, contributing 5.1% of generation as the country gradually diversifies its renewable electricity mix.
