France Energy Profile 2024: Electricity Mix
🔥 Fossil Fuels
Fossil fuels supplied only 5.8% of French electricity, among the lowest shares in the world. Natural gas made up 3.4%, coal 0.3%, and other fossil sources 2.1%. The low use reflects France’s long-standing nuclear focus.
🌍 Renewables
Renewables made up 26.2%. Hydropower contributed 12.4%, especially from Alpine regions. Wind power supplied 7.7%, solar 4.2%, and bioenergy 1.8%. Other renewables made up 0.1%.
⚛️ Nuclear Energy
Nuclear power provided 68.0% of electricity in 2024, the largest share of any major economy. Over 50 reactors remain in operation, though aging infrastructure is prompting both refurbishments and long-term planning for new builds.
