Global Energy Profile 2025: Electricity Mix
Global electricity generation in 2025 remained led by fossil fuels, which supplied 57.3% of the world's electricity. Coal was the largest source overall at 33.1%, followed by natural gas at 21.7%, highlighting the continued importance of fossil fuels in the global energy system.
Renewable energy provided 33.8% of worldwide electricity generation. Hydropower remained the largest renewable source at 14%, while solar (8.8%) and wind (8.5%) continued their rapid expansion and together accounted for a growing share of global electricity production.
Nuclear energy contributed 8.9% of global generation. Combined with renewables, low-carbon electricity sources supplied more than 42% of the world's electricity, reflecting ongoing investment in cleaner energy technologies across many regions.
