AI Could Transform the UK’s Changing Electricity Grid
Britain’s electricity grid was built for a different era, one defined by a handful of large power stations delivering predictable power to predictable demand. That model no longer applies. The UK passed 2 million solar installations in March 2026, while by 2025 offshore wind was contributing up to 16.5 GW of grid-connected capacity from nearly 3,000 turbines. Rather than managing a small number of large, controllable sources, operators must now balance millions of smaller, weather-dependent ones in real time.
This is the challenge Minister for Local Energy and Jobs Martin McCluskey addressed in a speech this week. His argument was direct: managing that level of complexity in real time will require AI. The government believes AI could help the grid respond as wind and solar output shifts, with the aim of cutting costs, improving reliability and strengthening energy security.
McCluskey was notably candid about how much of this remains unproven. “The word ‘could’ is doing a lot of heavy lifting here,” he said, before turning to the risks. The most significant is security: he described energy infrastructure as a known target for disruption “from our adversaries”, pointing to state-level threats rather than routine cyber risk, and said this is already happening across Europe.
The second is public consent. Introducing AI into critical infrastructure is not only a technical undertaking; it requires public understanding and acceptance, not simply deployment.
Set aside the surrounding announcements, and the underlying argument holds: the grid has outgrown the way it was previously run, and AI is emerging as a key tool for managing that complexity. Whether it can deliver the promised benefits remains, by the minister’s own admission, an open question.
