Rampion 2 Offshore Wind Farm Gets Government Go-Ahead
Planned as an extension to the existing Rampion Offshore Wind Farm—which has been generating electricity off the coast of Brighton since 2018—Rampion 2 will be built in the English Channel, between 13km and 26km from the Sussex coast. The new offshore array will cover an area of approximately 160 square kilometres and is expected to significantly boost renewable energy generation in the region. Once complete, Rampion 2 will connect to the national electricity grid at Bolney in Mid Sussex, helping power homes and businesses across the South East.
The application for the project was submitted by Rampion Extension Development Limited in August 2023. It has now received development consent from the Secretary of State for Energy Security and Net Zero, following a detailed examination process.
Over a six-month period, local residents, councils, and other stakeholders were invited to share their views on the proposals. The Planning Inspectorate said the project was reviewed in line with the Planning Act 2008 and completed within the statutory timescale.
This marks the 91st energy infrastructure application to be examined under the national planning process. Rampion 2 is expected to play a key role in the UK’s efforts to increase renewable electricity generation and reach its net zero targets. The decision allows the project to move into the construction phase, though a timeline for building and commissioning has not yet been announced.
