UK Achieves Milestone in Clean Energy with Record-Breaking 131 Projects in Sixth Renewables Auction

The United Kingdom has taken a significant leap towards its goal of becoming a clean energy superpower, as the latest renewables auction delivered 131 new green infrastructure projects. This remarkable achievement, which will generate enough energy to power the equivalent of 11 million homes, marks the largest auction round in the country’s history and represents a major advancement in the UK’s clean energy ambitions.

Following a disappointing auction in 2023, where no offshore wind projects were secured, this year’s results signal a dramatic turnaround. The auction has revitalized the offshore wind sector and provided a substantial boost to onshore wind, solar, and tidal energy. These developments are critical as the UK accelerates its mission to achieve clean power by 2030.

The success of this auction round is attributed in part to a strategic decision by the government to increase the auction budget by 50%, the largest funding uplift ever. This bold move resulted in a budget that was seven times larger than the previous round, enabling the approval of a record number of projects and ensuring that the UK remains on track to meet its clean energy targets.

These results show that together, this government and the energy industry are securing investment into our country. This auction has produced a record number of solar projects bolstering our mission for a solar revolution, we have powered forward with onshore wind, secured the largest commercial floating offshore wind project in the world and got the offshore industry back on its feet.

As we accelerate our plan for clean power by 2030 the government will work with the industry on how we can build on this success to ensure we can go even further and faster to deliver the power we need.

Energy Secretary, Ed Miliband

Beyond the environmental benefits, the expansion of wind and solar farms is expected to play a key role in lowering energy bills and stimulating economic growth across the nation. The government’s commitment to advancing renewable energy infrastructure demonstrates its resolve to rectify the shortcomings of past auction rounds and solidify the UK’s position as a leader in the global transition to clean energy.

As these projects come online, they will contribute significantly to reducing the UK’s carbon footprint and enhancing energy security, bringing the nation closer to its vision of a sustainable and prosperous future powered by clean energy.
