India Energy Profile 2025: Electricity Mix
India's electricity generation in 2025 continued to be dominated by fossil fuels, which supplied 73.3% of total generation. Coal remained the backbone of the country's power system, accounting for 70.8% of electricity as growing demand from households, industry and infrastructure continued to drive generation.
Renewables provided 24.1% of electricity generation, led by solar power at 9.4%, followed by hydropower (8.6%) and wind (5.0%). India continued to expand its renewable energy capacity, with solar playing an increasingly important role in meeting rising electricity demand.
Nuclear energy contributed 2.6% of electricity generation. Although still a relatively small part of the overall mix, India continues to invest in nuclear power as part of its long-term strategy to diversify electricity supplies and support lower-carbon generation.
