Italy Energy Profile 2025: Electricity Mix
Italy continued to rely heavily on natural gas for electricity generation in 2025, with fossil fuels supplying 51.2% of the country's power. Natural gas alone accounted for 47.2% of generation, remaining the backbone of Italy's electricity system despite continued investment in renewable energy.
Renewables provided 48.8% of electricity generation, led by solar (16.9%), hydropower (15.8%), and wind (8.1%). Italy's strong solar resource helped make solar the country's second-largest electricity source, while bioenergy also made a notable contribution.
Italy no longer generates electricity from nuclear power following the closure of its reactors, making it one of Europe's largest economies without domestic nuclear generation.
