Japan Energy Profile 2025: Electricity Mix
Japan's electricity mix in 2025 continued to be dominated by fossil fuels, which supplied 67.3% of total generation. Natural gas and coal were the two largest electricity sources, accounting for 32.8% and 32.1% respectively, as the country continues to rely on imported fuels to meet electricity demand.
Renewables generated 23.6% of Japan's electricity, led by solar power at 9.8%, followed by hydropower (7.2%) and bioenergy (5.3%). Solar has become an increasingly important part of Japan's energy transition since the early 2010s.
Nuclear energy contributed 9.1% of electricity generation as more reactors gradually returned to service. Although still well below pre-2011 levels, nuclear power continues to regain a larger role in Japan's electricity system.
