Russia Energy Profile 2025: Electricity Mix
Russia's electricity generation in 2025 remained dominated by fossil fuels, which supplied 64.3% of total generation. Natural gas was the largest source by a wide margin at 44.7%, followed by coal at 18.4%, reflecting the country's abundant domestic fossil fuel resources.
Renewables accounted for 17.4% of electricity generation, with hydropower contributing almost all of that share at 16.7%. Wind, solar and bioenergy remained relatively small contributors to Russia's electricity mix.
Nuclear energy generated 18.3% of Russia's electricity, making it the country's third-largest electricity source. Russia continues to operate one of the world's largest nuclear fleets while also exporting nuclear technology to international markets.
