South Africa Energy Profile 2024: Electricity Mix

🔥 Fossil Fuels
Fossil fuels dominated South Africa’s electricity mix at 83.8%. Coal remained the backbone at 83.0%, with a small share from other fossil sources at 0.8%.

🌍 Renewables
Renewables accounted for 13.1%. Solar delivered 8.0%, wind 4.5%, and bioenergy and hydro made up the remainder. South Africa continues to diversify as it faces pressure to reduce coal dependence.

⚛️ Nuclear
Nuclear provided 3.1% of electricity through the Koeberg nuclear plant, South Africa’s only reactor.
