UK Energy Profile 2024: Electricity Mix
🔥 Fossil Fuels
Fossil fuels made up 34.0% of UK electricity. Natural gas accounted for 29.9%, playing a critical backup role alongside renewables. Coal was nearly phased out, contributing just 0.8%. Other fossil sources, including oil and waste-based generation, made up 3.3%.
🌍 Renewables
Renewables delivered 51.5% of UK electricity. Wind led the way at 30.0%, with strong offshore and onshore resources. Bioenergy contributed 14.0%, largely from wood and waste. Solar provided 5.5%, and hydro added 2.0%.
⚛️ Nuclear Energy
Nuclear energy supplied 14.5%, with older reactors still operating and one major new station (Hinkley Point C) under construction. The overall nuclear share may shrink unless replacements are built in time.
