USA Energy Profile 2024: Electricity Mix

🔥 Fossil Fuels
Fossil fuels supplied 58.1% of U.S. electricity in 2024. Natural gas remained the primary source, generating 42.5% of total electricity thanks to abundant domestic supply, flexible output, and competitive prices. Coal contributed 14.9%, continuing its long-term decline but still important in some regions. Other fossil sources, including petroleum and miscellaneous fuels, made up 0.7% of the mix.

🌍 Renewables
Renewables accounted for 24.1% of total generation. Wind led at 10.3%, with high capacity in Texas, the Midwest, and the Plains. Solar power followed at 6.9%, expanding rapidly due to tax incentives and falling costs. Hydropower contributed 5.4%, mainly from western dams. Bioenergy added 1.1%, including landfill gas and wood waste, while other renewables made up 0.4%.

⚛️ Nuclear Energy
Nuclear energy provided 17.8% of the nation’s electricity, maintaining a stable output from over 90 commercial reactors. While no major new plants came online beyond the recent Vogtle expansion, nuclear remains a key firm low-carbon source in the U.S. power system.
