USA Energy Profile 2025: Electricity Mix
The United States maintained a diverse electricity mix in 2025, with natural gas remaining the largest source of generation at 40%. Fossil fuels accounted for 57% of total electricity production, reflecting the continued importance of gas-fired power plants in meeting demand across the country.
Renewable energy supplied 25.6% of generation. Wind remained the largest renewable source at 10.3%, followed by solar at 8.6% and hydropower at 5.4%. Solar continued to grow rapidly, supported by new utility-scale projects and increasing deployment across several states.
Nuclear energy provided 17.4% of U.S. electricity generation, making it the country's second-largest individual source after natural gas. The existing reactor fleet continues to play a major role in providing reliable low-carbon electricity.
