Hydroelectricity

Hydroelectricity generates power by harnessing the movement of water, making it one of the most widely used renewable energy sources.

How It Works
The most common type, impoundment hydro, uses dams to create reservoirs. Water released from these reservoirs flows through turbines, generating electricity. Other types include run-of-river and pumped storage hydro.

Advantages of Hydroelectric Power
Hydropower is a reliable, low-emission energy source with long lifespans and low operating costs. It provides steady electricity generation and grid stability while supporting water management and flood control.

Challenges & Future Outlook
Large hydro projects can disrupt ecosystems and require high upfront investment. Site availability is limited by geography, but new technologies like small-scale hydro and marine-based solutions could expand hydropower’s role in clean energy.
